Lace up for the Cure (est.2002)

Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure

We live here. We race here. We save lives here.

Today I had a rewarding experience working for New Balance at the Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure at Carson Beach, South Boston. The event had over 3,000 participants made up of volunteers, survivors, and supporters.  The spirited nature of the overall event was enriching and something I had yet to experience. There were devoted runners and walkers who traveled from miles away to attend.  I went in not knowing what to expect; I came out with a greater passion to make a change, fight like a girl, and volunteer with Susan G. Komen at future events. A charitable organization involved in communities around the country like this deserves support.
It was a few weeks back that I was offered the position to work at Race for a Cure promoting New Balance.  After accepting the offer, I looked further into the collaboration between New Balance and Komen.  New Balance has an athletic shoe program called Lace up for the Cure.  The lovely pink shoes I have on (seen in photo below) are the Special Edition 890vS sneakers. 5% of the proceeds from the Lace up for the Cure collection are donated to breasts cancer research efforts through Susan G. Komen.  They were very comfortable to walk around in all day and are so vibrant they kept my energy up!

On behalf of New Balance, my co-manager of the event, Julie and I passed out pink sneaker pins and breast cancer research eye black.  Participants could enter a raffle to win a free pair of shoes, courtesy of New Balance, and could donate $1+ for a pair of Lace up for the Cure shoelaces.

Fight Like a Girl

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so take some time to check out Susan G. Komen and other organizations that contribute to research funding efforts.  I will be volunteering at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Boston on October 4th with school, so if  you’re in the neighborhood check it out!  Major cities all over the country are running these events throughout the month of October.  Grab a pink ribbon and hook it onto your backpack, purse, jacket, etc. to show support for the cause.
